Gov’t Schools’ local manager walks the walk to Graham Creek!

Walter Garbutt is the local manager for government schools in the Stann Creek and Toledo Districts. He was one of the persons who also visited Graham Creek on Monday. That was Garbutt’s second trip to the village. He told us that he tries to visit as many schools on the first day of classes – but this Monday he spent all day in Graham Creek. Here’s what he shared about the purpose of his visit.

“There is no easy way to Graham Creek. It is a sacrifice, but it is worth it. The parents and community are so welcoming. As you saw, when we got there they were waiting to assist us to bring these things. These are inspirations for coming to these places; like the beauty of the river as we drove up the Sarstoon. The walk is not so easy but it is worth it. I make every effort to make it to schools on the first school day of the new school year. It inspires teachers; it encourages students and it also makes me feel in doing that it, it is a very worthwhile activity because then you are off to the right start. As demonstrated by the gifts given out today, it is obvious that through the efforts of different entities and organizations, like Channel 5, the business community has heard the call. From my experience, the business community has always heard the call and they are always willing to give once they feel convinced that it is going to be put to good use and what better use than with children. When you help them you touch the future and that is what you are doing here. These children have the potential of any other children who attend Belize Elementary and other prestigious school. They have the potential. I call on the teachers, the parents, the alcalde and the leaders of the village to ensure that the teachers work hard. Visit them, talk with them, encourage them and if they absent themselves then please let us know because we want them to really work with these children.”
