Sparks take Bz. District Women’s Basketball title

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderley inviting you to climb aboard for another fresh serving of Sports Monday. The Belize District Amateur Basketball competition at Big Bird’s Isle is in the thick of the playoffs and yesterday the female champion emerged after a heated display of hoops.

It’s Anamarie Thurton jumping against three time MVP Enid Dakers of Sparks to get game II underway–and all the Sparks need to do today is win and the title belongs to them again.

The Eagles take the early lead when Ursula Johnson goes backboard for two. Ursula Johnson is a legitimate player in this level and here she goes for two of her team high fourteen points.

The answer comes from Enid Dakers who goes all the way for two, and when she knocks down this bucket here we have a tied ballgame.

Erlette Reynolds then comes down and hits this long deuce and at the half it a three point Sparks lead.

So we go to second half and Enid Dakers comes up with the sweet move for two as Sparks begin to take control. Christine Avila then beats the Eagles defence downcourt for two big points.

Meanwhile, Ursula Johnson tries to bring her team back–the jumper from the top of the key is good. Johnson then comes up with this loose ball in traffic and knocks it down. But the day belongs to Sparks and watch Sylvia Sanker sink this three pointer.

Now Sanker deals to Dakers who gets the friendly role. She would finish with the game high seventeen points and nineteen rebounds, as Sparks goes on to repeat in 2001 as the Belize District Female Champion.

At the Under-20 level Gill Street Rampage burned Belize Bank Wildcats 57-56 yesterday to sweep the three game championship.

In Division I play Brodies Travellers get whipped in game I of the championship series 67-70 by University of Belize. It’s the first loss by Brodies and it certainly comes at a bad time because if they lose game II Tuesday, they are out of here.

Also set for Tuesday is Game II of the Division II series between Habet Starliners and Scare Dem Bullets. Habet goes in with a 1-zip lead.

Now lets head to the City Centre for the Friday night showdown between Data Pro Phoenix Raiders and Dangriga Aba Iseni in semi-pro basketball.

The Raiders display good ball movement that culminates with a Kirk Smith smash to take the early lead.

At the other end Mervin “Bae” Castillo finds Sean Faux down low who makes it good, but only after two tries. Rosco Rhys then finds Derek Morgan whose perimeter jumper brings two points for Dangriga.

Downcourt, Floyd Leslie lets it go from downtown and gets it to fall. Think he can do it again folks–we he finds the same spot for the same results.

Mervin “Bae” Castillo then takes it strong to Kirk Smith and at the half the Raiders are up by three.

In second half it seems the Dangriga team left its game in the locker room as Darren Bovell goes untouched to the glass for two. Bovell gets the feeling for three and he shows his range.

Kirk Smith goes to the left-hand for the slam and the Raiders win this one, running away in a 72-56 blowout.

Finally folks, our National Football Team is expected to return from Honduras today. We lost 4-zip to Costa Rica on Wednesday, held the Guatemalan’s to a thrilling 3-3 tie on Friday, but Guatemala drew 1-1 with Costa Rica to move on. Yes, we certainly gained a whole measure of success from inside Central America.
