Retired union official murdered in Cayo
A veteran union activist has been murdered in Cayo. Fifty-seven year old Antonio Farias, who retired as vice president of the Public Service Union in 1998 and since that time has operated the Three Star Bar in San Ignacio, was killed just after midnight Saturday as he left the establishment. After closing the club, located on Awe Street, Farias walked towards his pick-up truck when a man dressed in black confronted him in what appeared to be a robbery attempt. What transpired between them remains unclear, but the assailant shot Farias in the neck leaving him lying dead in a pool of blood. Police have detained a suspect whom they expect to charge with murder. The funeral has been set for Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in San Ignacio.
