BTL Nets continue to roll in B.B.A.

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderley and it’s time for another ride on Sports Monday. Semi-pro basketball took centre stage at the City centre Friday night where the BTL Net clashed with the University of Belize. At the tip off its Ernest Broaster jumping against 6’8″ Eric Maye of the U.S. and we’re underway.

We always talk about a fast start and BTL certainly lives up to that definition as Frank Ford finds A.C. Augustine who opens the scoring with a three-pointer.

And on the very next play Keith Acosta connects with Vince “The Postman” Estrada who knocks down the three from the other side. Of course U.B. has its own guns as displayed by Darwin Carter who finds Demzley Arnold, who raises for two.

The university team shows a real determination fighting for loose balls and they come up with the steal here as Eric Maye makes good. On the very next play A.C. Augustine gets to show off his individual skills going all the way to the hoop for the successful lay.

Kevin Seroki then spots Keith Acosta on the move and serves him up this alley oop, which makes a statement. It’s Seroki again finding Albert Alvarez with the bounce pass and the one hand jam follows. Give Seroki another assist who finds Keith Acosta who licks down the three pointer.

Downcourt Kelvin Gillette finds Rodneal Armstong, who goes glass for two. Now watch the Nets breakdown on defence to give Eric Maye an uncontested slam-dunk and at the half it’s a 49-35 BTL lead.

The Nets come out of intermission still hot when Vince Estrada knocks down the three. But U.B. comes right back as Kelvin Gillette shows off his individual skills.

So Estrada decides to up the ante striking for another three to cement the 19-point lead. Nevertheless, U.B. makes a run, Rodneal Armstrong with the turn and jumper hits nothing but cords.

Michael Palmerson finds the big man Eric Maye and he gets two under pressure. Eloy Lamb then saves this ball to find Darwin Carter, who somehow gets two to fall.

The admiral then finds himself at the right place at the right time as he gets an easy two. And when Carter misfires on the long-range shot, Alex Tillett rams it home with authority and the lead is down to four.

Carter then finds Eric Maye and the two-hand slam tells that story as the deficit falls to a single point. However, good free throw shooting by the Nets down the stretch and this three-point dagger from the Postman gives the 86-75 big W to the BTL Nets.

In other basketball news, amateur play at Big Bird’s Isle last night saw Scare Dem Bullets take out Queen Square Builders 74-68 and Brodies Travellers eliminated Appliance World 78-62. These two teams move on to the playoffs.

Meanwhile folks, the National Football tam is in Honduras for participation in this year’s UNCAF Nations Cup Tournament. They’ll see their first action tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. and we take this opportunity to wish our guys maximum success. We’re still looking for that elusive win. We also hear that Galavision, the TV giant for Central America will be providing coverage of that game. If they do we’ll certainly have a look see.
