Sedi Sounds Off on Joshua Perdomo Loan Write-off

Joshua Perdomo

The loan write-off that has been approved for a forty thousand dollar debt that was owed by Joshua Perdomo, son of Cabinet Secretary Carlos Perdomo, to the Government of Belize is still a talking point in various political circles.  While the amnesty received Cabinet’s approval, several ministers have chosen not to comment on the controversial matter.  This morning, Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington sounded off on the matter and says that it is not the first such debt to be written off by the Barrow Administration, despite Perdomo’s background and family connection.

“I find it so disappointing that people make such a hue and cry over the write-off of a forty thousand dollars that was spent on education for anybody.  I think people should be able to go for further education for free at government’s expense because when they’re finished they come right back here and work and the better educated people, the better our country is going to develop.  That’s how I see that, so I don’t make an issue of that.  And with respect to the government write-off, maybe I am biased because I owe taxes so maybe I am biased, but the truth is that we are not earning enough to be able to pay our taxes and everything on time and it’s not the poor people who really get the best out of the country, it’s the rich people.”
