Attorney Says Nelson Espinosa was Beaten to Confess to Murder

On Thursday afternoon, twenty-two-year-old Harmonyville resident, Nelson Espinosa was arraigned for the heinous murder of nineteen-year-old Adamir Choc. It is believed that Choc was sexually assaulted and murdered in a bushy area off Never Delay Road the morning she went missing from a nightclub in Belmopan. Police have impounded a car in relation to the murder case and several other persons remain in custody as the investigation continues. News Five spoke with Hurl Hamilton, who has been retained as the attorney for the accused. He says that Espinosa was physically abused by the police and forced to confess to the killing. News Five has obtained photographs that show injury to Espinosa back and hands. Hamilton says that he has been trying to acquire a medical report from the Western Regional Hospital since police said that his client was treated there. Up to this afternoon, Espinosa had also not been transferred to central prison as yet.

“I was retained after the arraignment so I had an opportunity briefly to speak with my client and he has indicated to me that the police had tortured him, forced him, beat him, coerced him into giving a statement to the police. As a matter of fact, I have personally seen the injuries on my client and at that time, he was in severe pain. The brief discussion that I had with my client, clearly he is denying the allegations made against him.”

“Sir I am understanding that even though on arraignment, he was remanded to the central prison until December eighteenth; that has not happened as yet?”

“No, as a matter of fact, he is still at the Belmopan police station. I am made to understand that he is going to be transported this afternoon to the central prison. Why so late the transfer? I cannot say. As a matter of fact, I am trying to get a medical report. I’m made to understand, I was told that he was taken to the Western Regional Hospital to get medical treatment. I am still trying to a hold on that medical report, but I have not gotten my hands on a copy as yet. They have definitely went afoul in terms of the evidence act. How to get a confession statement. Their investigation just start off on the wrong foot, Duane. To force someone, to beat someone, to coerce someone into giving a statement, that’s not proper policing in my respective view.”
