“Jawmeighan” wins mountain bike race

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderley and we thank you for joining this rush on Sports Monday. Talk about forty-two cyclists gearing up for the ride from Belize City to More Tomorrow Village, a distance of some fifty miles on mountain bikes.

If you’re looking at your screen and see the big name riders, you’ve been hearing about–well this mountain bike race sponsored by Santino is open to all comers.

And we’re off to More Tomorrow Village in a pelathon that’s very deep with talent. Cross country champion Ernest Meighan makes his presence very early, grabbing this station prize, while being cute at the same time.

Feeling good Jawmeighan then decides to breakaway as Roger Troyer of Cayo tags along. The breakaway would stick people, all the way into the rough at the cut-off at More Tomorrow Village as both riders pull the curve.

For Ernest Meighan the rough road brought immediate problems as he suffered a tire puncture, which allows Roger Troyer to run all alone.

However, Jawmeighan recovers and by the time the race rolls into the village he’s back in the lead followed by teammates Paul Trapp and Roger Troyer.

And this is Ernest Meighan grabbing the W in uncontested fashion having flashed pass our cameras. Team-mate Paul Trapp pulls up second and Shane Vasquez of Cayo rolls in for third, while Mateo Cruz, Francisco “The Animal” Flores, Jeffrey Zelaya and Mariano Cruz rounds out the top ten.

And yes, Santino must be congratulated for perfectly executing a brilliant idea.

Turning to football news, Kulture Yabra looked for its four straight BFL playoff win yesterday at the MCC grounds in the role of host to winless Juventus of Orange Walk.

To start things off Roger Jones sets table for El Gigante who unleashes a missile with bad intention that just makes outside the sticks. Mark Leslie then gets a clear shot at goal, but couldn’t quite come up with the conversion.

Next it’s Norman Nunez in a one on one situation with Stanley Reneau, but he loses the scoring opportunity to complications as Juventus continues to weather the storm.

Meanwhile, folks controversy rear its ugly head when Norman Nunez smashes into the side of the net–the ball breaks the side netting and referee David Jones rules goal.

The howl of protest from Juventus is justifiable, but the referee is adamant about his ruling. Fortunately, the fourth referee and the commissioner at the game pulled the referee’s coat. And after consultation with linesman Clother–David Jones reverses his ruling and we’ve got a new ballgame.

Downfield Orange Walk finally threatens Charlie Slusher when this long range launch crashes against the crossbar and the follow-up shot misses.

It’s late into first half play when Norman Nunez mounts this impressive individual effort, he spots Kello Leslie unattended on the left flank and Yabra takes a 1-zip lead.

If you like spotkicks people, Vallan Simms serves up this beauty, but Stanley Reneau is for real people and at the half we have a 1-zip Yabra lead.

In second half action Nunez gets the opportunity to give his team the 2-zip lead, but fails on this occasion.

The equaliser almost comes for the visitors when Lemott Mejia fires this left foot, but the ball raises over the crossbar. It’s still Yabra looking to add to the lead as Gigante fires from afar, but Reneau is really jamming today.

This time it’s McCauley with the scoring chance, but he blows the one on one situation much to the disappointment of the city fans.

The second Yabra goal finally comes when Tilliman receives this pass, delays and sets–and the right foot beats Stanley Reneau as Yabra goes on to post its fourth straight payoff victory with a 2-zip blast.

In other BFL playoff results, Belmopan Builders Hardware Bandits won it’s fourth straight with a win on penalties over Sagitun Saturday night. That win is good for only one point, which pushes them back in second place behind Yabra. Metro Stars picked up its second playoff win with a 2-1 torching of Verdes in overtime. Sagitun and Metro Stars are tied at third with 5 points apiece.

Turning to the volleyball scene, in friendly play at the City Centre Saturday night, Jaguars crushed Scorpions in three straight sets 25-19, 25-22, 25-19. The volleyball community prepares for the prestigious NORECA qualifier tournament to be staged here in Belize in July featuring the national teams of Costa Rica, Jamaica and Guatemala.

In basketball new, the Belize District Basketball season at Big Bird’s Isle over the weekend saw Mirab default to Brodies Travellers Friday night, while M&M Christian Ambassadors stopped Medina’s House of Jewellery 63-59. On Sunday Brodies Travellers routed University of Belize 75-49 and in Under-20 play Rampage edged Team Colonial 56-50.
