Chairman Says PAC Remains Non-Functional
Julius Espat is also the Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, PAC. The PAC is tasked at looking at government spending and holding public officers and politicians responsible According to Espat, despite many efforts, the PAC remains non-functional. Espat says that the committee which is made up of a majority of government ministers has no political teeth to hold the government responsible.
Julius Espat, Chairman, Public Accounts Committee
“It has always remained non-functional; I’ve tried to make it public so people can be aware of the scenario. The PAC had a report. We agreed that the Chairman and the other member of the Opposition will chair a report, that report was tabled precisely one year ago. We haven’t gotten a response from the fur members of government because they have no interest and the worst part of it is that two of them vying for leadership of their party so they should be ashamed of themselves. The Public Accounts Committee is the only committee under law that can deal with check and balances and if we don’t take it seriously don’t deal with that Committee then there is no hope in the whole part of having transparency and accountable on how your and the people’s money is being spent.”
