New Supreme Court justice sworn in

A new justice of the Supreme Court was sworn in this morning. Christopher Blackman, a fifty-six year old Barbadian, has over thirty years experience in the legal field and has served as a senator and president of the Barbados Bar Association. Justice Blackman was sworn in this morning at a ceremony at the Supreme Court in Belize City.

“This is a great honour to serve as a justice in this jurisdiction. I look forward with the co-operation of the bar and the Attorney General’s chambers to making a contribution to the development of such legal professes as will benefit the citizens of this country and others who come before the court whom we of the judiciary are appointed to serve. I have today in addition to the oath of allegiance, sworn I will uphold the constitution of laws of Belize without the fear of favour, affection or ill will. With regards to help I shall endeavour all times to be conscious and true to that oath. I view the commitment to do right and an obligation to ensure that my judgements are timely and reasoned.”

“My lord Chief Justice, attorneys, and Mr. president, I commit myself to serving to the best of my ability. Thank you for your welcome and good wishes.”

Another new justice, Belizean Mansel Thurton, is expected to be appointed in the near future. This will bring the number of active justices to five. A sixth justice, George Meerabux, is currently under suspension, while the Belize Advisory Council considers accusations of impropriety made against him.
