Official Details on the Stabbing Death on Caye Caulker; Who will be Charged?

There are fresh details tonight on the unfortunate stabbing death of Isaac Marin and the stabbing of his brother Carlos, in Caye Caulker. Seventeen-year-old Isaac died shortly after the attack and Carlos is in stable condition. The person behind the stabbing is their cousin, Jaymie Marin, a mental health patient. Isaac is the second person to be killed in four months by mental health patients. Police are proceeding with the investigation, but it is yet to be determined what charges will be placed on Jaymie Marin. Here is News Five’s Duane Moody.

Will Jaymie Marin be charged for the murder and attempted murder of his cousins in Caye Caulker? The diagnosed mental health patient remains in police custody tonight as investigations continue into what transpired in the wee hours of Tuesday at the Marin’s family house at the corner of Luciano Reyes Street and Avenida Langosta on the island. What has been confirmed is that Jaymie stabbed seventeen-year-old Isaac and his brother twenty-five-year-old Carlos Marin. Only Carlos survived the attack; Isaac perished minutes later while receiving treatment at the medical centre on the island.

“They observed two persons with apparent stab wounds and bleeding. Those persons were taken to the Caye Caulker Polyclinic where upon arrival, seventeen-year-old Isaac Marin succumbed to those injuries. Also injured along with him was his brother Carlos Marin. What the police know so far is that Carlos Marin was socializing with a cousin, one Jaymie Marin inside the living room of their home when obviously an altercation ensued and as a result Isaac Marin then got up from where he was sleeping in an attempt to aid his brother and that is when he too was stabbed.”
As the official details of the incident were shared with the media today, Assistant Commissioner of Police revealed that the accused was also stabbed multiple times during the incident. So where does that put the stabbing death investigation?

“Have charges been proffered on Jaymie as yet?”

“No, not as yet. We have not yet preferred any charges against him.”

“Is there a reason why charges have not been laid as yet?”

“Well we are doing the investigation, recording statements and preparing the file. We were told at some point that the accused person in this crime had some mental issues so that too will be taken into consideration while the file is being compiled and then that will be sent to the D.P.P. office for her direction.”

“To some extent; that would be a part as well as the post-mortem results.”

“Will there be an investigation into charging Carlos Marin for the stabbings that Jaymie Marin received?”

“Well at this point the investigation is still ongoing so we do not know who all will be charged as yet.”
As Caye Caulker Chairperson, Seleny Villanueva Pott confirmed on Tuesday to News Five, islanders are aware that Jaymie has been diagnosed with a mental health condition and was being treated.

“It is known that he is a mental patient. What we do know is that he was getting help; he was evaluated and was on treatment. I really can’t say what triggered last night or what transpired. Whenever incidents like these transpire, it shakes the entire community. We believe that in a situation like this it is something that triggered the patient and it could have been worse and we are grateful that we didn’t lose more than one person in this unfortunate event.”
This is the second person to lose his life in four months at the hands of mental health patients. The Belize Police Department is looking carefully at the cases.

“It is one that we are working with through the Ministry of Health to see how they can help us to do the relevant evaluation and write the relevant report and once that is done, then we will then forward the file to the D.P.P. and the D.P.P. is going to make the determination as to whether or not we are going to charge for murder, manslaughter or whatever the case may be. It is a situation that again is unfortunate, but something needs to be done to see how we can address it.”
