B.E.L. hopes blackouts will end tonight
Officials at Belize Electricity Limited are once again keeping their fingers crossed, hoping that assurances given by Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission are reliable. B.E.L. has been told that the four hundred and eighty megawatt Merida Three plant, which has been down for repairs for over a month, will come back online sometime tonight. If it does not, consumers on Belmopan’s feeder three, Orange Walk’s feeder two, Corozal’s feeder one, San Pedro’s feeder three, Ladyville’s feeder eight and feeder six in Belize City can expect blackouts from 6:30 to 10:00 tonight. During the dry season Belize relies on Mexico for twenty-five megawatts of electricity, which represents around sixty percent of the nation’s peak demand.
