“Ma Haze” shows off her new house
We’ve all heard of government’s promise to see ten thousand houses built during its five-year term of office. What has been less publicized is how that effort impacts on the life of an individual. Today Ann-Marie visited one Belize City woman who hosted her on a tour.

It’s always a homeowner’s pride to show off their first home to family and friends. However, what is different about Hazel King or “Ma Haze” as she’s affectionately known, is that she telephoned Radio Krem’s morning talk show this morning, to invite the public to visit her new abode, of which she is justifiably proud.
Hazel King
“We lived here thirty-six years and I was trying for a house from 1992, from when the Housing Department was behind the old prison. Now I’ve finally achieved my goal, my dream. I’m all excited, I’m waiting for the day to move across.”
The move across from this forty-year-old family hose left to her when her mother died over two decades ago.
Hazel King
“The house used to leak, but the problem right now it that it’s rotten and the flooring, and with my weight, I go through, and the flooring on the verandah.”
Ann-Marie Williams
“You’ve been patching it for a number of years?”
Hazel King
“Sure, and repairing, fixing.”
Repairing and fixing will be a thing of the past for Ma Haze, a single mother who says she has been on a nine-year campaign with the Housing Department to realise her dream of owning a home.

Hazel King has worked as a cleaner at Belize Global Travel Services for the last sixteen years. While gathering information for the story Ann-Marie learned that “Ma Haze” won the material for her new curtains right here on “Gimme 5”.
