… And Zeta Cartel is the US radar

Story PictureAnother link to the whole web is the March third grenade attack at the Belama Phase One home of Comptroller of Customs, Gregory Gibson. This is believed to have been the work of drug cartel affiliates whose drug trade has been severely affected since the Customs Department introduced a serious crackdown on contraband importations. But since then Customs has intercepted several shipments of cough medicines containing the illicit chemical, pseudo-ephedrine, which is currently in high demand in the underworld for its use in the manufacturing of the addictive methamphetamine or crystal meth. The drug trade is a problem that Minister of National Security, Carlos Perdomo says demands continuous effort but with help, we can control it.

Voice of Carlos Perdomo, Minister of National Security
“That visit to Mexico is part of a larger visit to the Caribbean. As you know President Obama will continue to the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and I think on his way back he might—I’m not sure about this—but he might stop in one of the Central American countries. It’s a part of a big coordinatory effort. The drug cartels just have so much money that it’s very hard to combat them because they have superior weapons. They have sometimes superior transportation. Sometimes they find it easy with all that money to corrupt specific people and also to recruit local help for the movement of their drugs all over Central America and the Caribbean.”

“Are you saying Minister we’re fighting a losing battle here?”

Carlos Perdomo
“No, no, it’s not a losing battle but it’s a hard battle. You can see in Mexico it’s even harder but it’s not a losing battle. It’s just it can get pretty messy.”

While several joint investigations have been ongoing into the contraband importations, the only end result thus far has been the interdiction of three Customs officers. This was for illegally releasing the suspect container with the medicines without proper documentation. The officers’ case will be heard as soon as the Public Service Commission sets a date for their hearing. A reward of eleven thousand dollars is being offered for information on the grenade attack on the Comptroller of Customs.
