Basketball blossoms at Bird’s Isle
Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’re in tuned with this offering of Sports Monday. Friday brought another big double header of Division I basketball at Bird’s Isle and we pick up the action late in the first half with M&M Christian Ambassadors boasting a ten point lead over Mirab.
The Ambassadors extend the lead to twelve when Douglas Hyde deals to Clinton Tillett who lays it up for two.
Glenroy Lightfoot wants three and he gets three and at the break M&M is up by eighteen.
In second half Mirab comes out more offensive minded as Rodneal Armstrong puts back the Charlie Dunk miss for two.
Byron “Shackles” Flowers then sinks the three point shot as Mirab continues to close the gap cutting the deficit to eleven.
Flowers is the man for Mirab tonight and again he hits the three. He would finish with the game high of thirty-one points, but it wouldn’t be enough.
At the other end Andrew Robateau raises in traffic and delivers two for the Ambassadors.
This bucket by George Flowers cut the Mirab deficit to five, they would eventually cut it to three, but M & M pulls away in money time.
And it’s Glenroy Lightfoot closing out the show hitting two freebies from the cherry stripe as the Ambassadors go on to post the 68-59 big W.
So we go to the nightcap between Brodies Travellers and University of Belize. It’s Keith Acosta jumping against Ernest Broaster and we’re underway.
The first foul of the ballgame comes from Darmein Flowers who streaks in from the left side for the lay.
The pill seems too hot to handle right now, so Erick Garbutt-the Urkelman-puts it up and sends it home for an eight point U.B. lead
Junior Westby helps the Brodies comeback in sinking this three. The Mr. MVP Keith Acosta gets going as he emphasizes with this two-hand slam.
Claude “Too Tall” Jones decides he’ll join the fun coming up with this monster slam. Keith Acosta displays his basketball range with this turn around jumper and at the half Brodies Travellers led by nine.
Meanwhile, U.B. comes out after intermission determined to make it a ballgame as Michael Palmerson penetrates baseline for two. Urkel Garbutt deals to Darmein Flowers and he gets the U.B. two for a five-point deficit.
Palmerson then finds himself unattended and sinks the big three and we’ve got a ballgame indeed. Palmerson would lead U.B. with fourteen points.
Who you gonna call? Well the Travellers team goes to…who else, Keith Acosta and he breaks the 35-35 tie. He would finish with a two double at 27 points, 12 rebounds.
In the closing moments Brodies Travellers begin to pull away. Palo Musa sinks this jumper. Give Acosta the assist as Gadsden Ferguson hits, and then Claude “Too Tall” Jones goes baseline as Brodies Travellers grab the 66-60 final score to win their second in a row.
In football news the Belize Youth Soccer League concluded its season yesterday at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex with raptors beating Berger Stars 4-3 on penalties to take the Under-13 title. Raptors then blew past Brown Bombers 6-2 for the Under-15 championship and then edged Brown Bomber 2-1 to take the U-12 title, sweeping the Belize Youth Soccer League.
We want to say congratulations to Mario Rodriguez and Mr. Philip Murray. You’re doing a wonderful job for the kids.
