Edward P. Yorke Fields Top Students for Second Consecutive Year

Josephine Flowers

As we said, all three female students were enrolled at the Edward P. Yorke High School in Belize City. The administration at the school is ecstatic because this is the second consecutive year that they have fielded the top two scorers of the CSEC exams. Acting Principal Josephine Flowers says that the outstanding performance by its students is also due to commitment by the teachers and parents.

“What we do here, we encourage our students, especially the ones who would need help in providing funds for sixth form to at least do fifteen so some of our students went for eighteen this year and they did well. We must say kudos to our teachers because within them, this would not have been possible. The teachers show the dedication, commitment, they do the classes whenever the students require it because remember these are challenges; we only offer eight subjects in each course. So for you to be doing eighteen, you are doing two plus; two course for two persons plus two extra subjects. And the commitment from our teachers, they do it during lunch, break in the evenings, after school; they do it on Saturdays and some people on Sundays and some even take them to their homes with them. We could say the same thing for the students; their commitment to excellence. For you to come to school, you are still getting graded for your eight subjects and you have to do all these extra work. But CSEC is making it a little easier for some of them because like for business for three subjects, you only have to do one S.B.A. now; before that, you would have to do three. So they are making it easier. And the parents. When we aren’t getting our work from our students, we call the parents and the parents make sure that they bring in their work because they still have to do their work as well as do the extra on their own. And our teachers do the extra classes free of cost.”
