Belize City gas station hit by mob

Story Picture
Lavish was not the only Belize City business that was robbed on Thursday. About a quarter after six the Shell One-Stop Gas Station at the corner of Cemetery Road and Central American Boulevard was raided by at least twenty young men coming from the direction of Lord’s Ridge Cemetery. Leticia Ford, the gas station’s manager, said that it all happened in the blink of an eye.

“What happened, we noticed a group of young men coming onto the compound and went straight to the store. They’re count is about twenty or more. They came in, took the liquors from the coolers, chips from off the shelf. They came out and held up two of the attendants while they were on their way out, robbed them of their cash, their personal cash and a couple other government orders. That’s (the orders) probably not of value to them, but to us because if we lose them, we will take a loss if we can’t recover the government orders.

“They didn’t get away with much cash because we have a strict policy where we don’t allow our employees to keep cash on them. So between the two employees that they robbed, they only got about a maximum of four hundred dollars. The liquors was about three hundred and fifty dollars and an undetermined amount in chips and snacks.”

“Did you see where the guys came from?”

“They came from off Cemetery Road. Actually, they came through the construction from the roundabout. Apparently they were harassing people over there before they came to the compound.”

Ford said that the men appeared to be coming from the funeral of the late Rodwell Neal.

A couple of hours before the mass robbery at One-Stop, four masked gunmen jacked a Chinese owned shop on Barrack Road. Twenty-eight year old Jie Xiung Li told police that the four robbers entered his store and demanded cash. One of them hit him on the head with his gun butt and took three hundred dollars and a set of keys. No arrests have yet been made.
