Cuthkelvin declares candidacy in Albert

Story Picture
As recently as Friday, when reporting on the loss of his job as the UDP’s mouthpiece, we described Delroy Cuthkelvin as a man unable to find his niche. Today Cuthkelvin reinvented himself and the UDP pulled a political shocker by announcing that not only is the propagandist supporting the party, but he will seek its nomination in the Albert division. At a press conference this morning the onetime journalist denounced the ruling PUP as a vindictive party which had betrayed the public’s trust. When asked why such a vindictive party rewarded the UDP activist with a well paid government job, the candidate was unrepentant.

Delroy Cuthkelvin, Political Aspirant

“The PUP won the 1998 elections with an overwhelming majority, which means it was a popular government. That is something that we must all respect as Belizeans, when the people decide who they want to lead our country. I thought at that time that for me, the best decision was to not be actively involved at the time and since I was offered a job with the government, and I must clarify that, not with the PUP party, with the government, there was no problem with me taking that up. In fact, in the United States of America and many other countries, the ruling party has always employed people from the other party, so I thought there was no problem with that. So having said that, let me say though, that two and a half years through the term of this administration, it is clear that they have reverted back to their old ways and I have no problem fighting them again.”

At the press conference Party Leader Dean Barrow also introduced Leo Obando, a former PUP supporter who will be seeking the UDP nomination in the Cayo North constituency. Looking forward to future conventions Barrow pointed to Caribbean Shore where this weekend Oscar Ayuso will be nominated by acclamation and Toledo West where Dennis Usher, Duane Wagner and Charles Salgado will fight it out in early April. The party leader pointed out that the public introduction of Cuthkelvin and Obando did not indicate an official endorsement by the party hierarchy.
