American National charged for fatal RTA in Hopkins

The second accident was in the south, a Hopkins resident was knocked down and killed by a drunk driver on Friday night. Forty-year-old Steven Olivas was riding his bike in the village when an American national in a vehicle hit him from behind. The driver of the vehicle, Mark Cairns, was slapped with several charges, including driving a vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit.  The fatal road traffic accident happened around eleven-forty that night. “Hopkins Police was called to an area on the main road, south of Hopkins, where upon arrival they observed the motionless body of forty-year-old Steven Olivas of Hopkins. A little farther from the body, police observed a blue in color bicycle with extensive damage to the back wheel. What was reported to the police is that Mr. Olivas was southbound when he was knocked down from behind by white Range Rover driven by fifty-seven-year-old American National Mark Cairns. The scene was processed and the body was removed to the Southern Regional Hospital where it was pronounced dead. So far, police have since carried out an investigation and charged Mark Cairns for the crimes of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct and driving with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit. At this point those are the charges that he has received in relation to that. We were also made to understand that he is not a resident of Hopkins but he was just visiting.”
