Joseph Myvett

A second fatal traffic accident was recorded on Thursday, this time in the south. Police were called out to Santa Cruz Village in the Stann Creek District where they saw a Hispanic man lying dead on the Southern Highway. The unidentified victim was knocked down and killed while riding his bicycle between miles twenty-four and twenty-five. At the scene, police observed a badly damaged vehicle which was driven at the time by thirty-seven-year-old Woelke Jacobs of Unitedville Village, Cayo. He told police that his vision was impaired by an oncoming vehicle causing him to hit the cyclist.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crime Investigation Branch

“Police responded to information of a road traffic accident shortly before six am this morning between miles twenty one and twenty two on the Southern Highway which would be in the vicinity of Santa Cruz Village.  Upon the police’s arrival to the scene a Hispanic male was seen motionless with severe head and body injuries on the right hand side of the highway when traversing south and a little distance away was a damaged bicycle and a grey Toyota pickup. The driver reported to police that he was south bound and a vehicle coming in the opposite direction impaired his vision with is headlight and in the process he did not see the bicycle rider until he was too close to avoid an accident which caused him to knocked down that individual.”

Jacobs is detained pending investigation.
