Kevin Jex Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter
Kevin Jex was back in court today for a mitigation hearing. He was originally accused of the murder of Desmond Miller but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter on July 16, 2019. The court heard from two character witnesses, including his sister, Jenisse Ramirez today. Ramirez told the court that her brother, Jex, was the one who put her and her other brother through school by selling pint bottles and she pleaded with the court to give him another chance at life. The court also heard from Jex, who expressed remorse for his actions, and told the court that he is now a changed man. Attorney Leeroy Banner, who is representing Jex, asked the court, to take into consideration several factors in sentencing. Jex was a man that provided for his family, he entered an early guilty plea, and the attack was not a vicious attack with a knife or gun, but it was a piece of wood that he used to hit the deceased. Justice Marilyn Williams has reserved sentencing for Jex until February six, 2020. The incident occurred on November fifth, 2013, at the San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi where forty–year-old Miller, a security guard was on duty. Miller was instructed to keep Jex out of the terminal since he was allegedly harassing tourists. The two men got into an argument which led to Jex hitting Miller to the back of his head with a piece of wood. As a result, the attack left Miller in a coma and several days later he succumbed to his injuries.
