Gilberto Chanek Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter
Twenty-four year old Gilberto Chanek also appeared in the Supreme Court this morning. He was originally charged with the murder of fifty-year-old Carlitos Valdez; but today he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter before Justice Colin Williams. The court accepted Chanek’s guilty plea. His attorney, Senior Crown Simeon Sampson, asked the court that a psychological evaluation be undertaken on Chanek before his fate is determined. Justice Williams then ordered a mental health status report to be completed by January twenty-seventh, 2020 prior to sentencing on January thirtieth 2020. The incident occurred on the night of August third, 2018, when Chanek stabbed Valdez as many as eight times with a knife. The commotion alerted other persons in the house where Valdez lived, including a police officer who apprehended the accused
