4 candidates vie for PUP in Caribbean Shores

The political convention season continues to blossom and this weekend the focus will be on the Caribbean Shores division. After knocking off Prime Minister Manuel Esquivel in 1998, one would have thought that incumbent representative and Minister of Health Joe Coye would have clear sailing. But no less than three challengers have decided to take him on. These include city councilors Austin Waight and Merilyn Young as well as radio talk show host Rosalie Staines. The PUP secretary general still can’t tell us what the criteria are for becoming a candidate or even who is eligible to vote, but such minor details have never stood in the way of Belizean democracy. May the best man or woman win.
