Mark Waight found not guilty again

This morning twenty-one-year-old Mark Waight was found not guilty for the second time and the judgment came six months apart from each other. Waight was on trial for the attempted murder of Jamelia Neal. In arriving at his decision, Justice Colin Williams said that he did not find the testimony of the accused sister, Desiree Waight, to be credible. The Justice was also not convinced of the testimony of the prosecution’s key witness, Jamelia Neal, in order to convict Waight.  During the trial, Neal had testified that on the night of June twenty-third, 2015, she was at a shop on Caesar Ridge Road in Belize City making a purchase when Waight pointed a gun in her face. Waight pulled the trigger, but the gun snapped. Neal then tried to escape from her assailant who managed to fire several shots while Neal was fleeing. He was wounded in the shoulder, elbow and hip. The accused gave a statement from the dock claiming that Neal had a grudge against him since he was a suspect in the murder of her uncle. Waight was unrepresented while Senior Crown Counsel Shanice Lovell prosecuted the case. In June of this year, Waight was acquitted of journalist Kareem Clarke’s murder.
