Problems at WASA curtail water supply
It may not have been a crime, but consumers in Belize City and environs are still feeling victimized nonetheless. Residents from Sand Hill to the city will be deprived of water at various times over the next two days and according to WASA spokesman Omar Silva, the cuts are unavoidable.

“Right now, we have a problem at the treatment plant that we detected on Friday. It called for urgent repairs and our crew has been addressing this problem. We sent out an announcement to the various radio stations and told them we’ll have this problem normalized by Wednesday night. Apart from that, you’ll notice we have low water pressure and this is because of the expansion project on the Northern and Western Highway. Several times we have the excavator digging where they are going to lay pipes and what happens is that on many occasions they burst existing pipes and we have to repair them, it takes about two, three hours.

“You mentioned excavation problems, why are you having so many problems that when digging, pipes are being burst?”
Omar Silva
“If you notice how the Northern and the Western Highway are situated, the pipes go on the same side of the road as usual, the way it usually used to be. The laying of the new pipes will be just inches away from the existing pipes and on many occasions we’re dealing with machinery and humans.”

“This morning many people didn’t bathe because there was no water. When can we expect water in Belize City and other areas?”
Omar Silva
“As I said, due to the water at the treatment plant Saturday, we have been rationing water in different areas of the City. If you notice, we are filling our reservoir right now and we will have water in peak hours, which is from 5:00 going onwards, and in the morning we full up the Wilson Street pumping station from 12:00 at night to 6:00 in the morning, so that we have water.”
To see if WASA’s assurances are believable, viewers need only turn on their faucets.
