Hacker enters BTL website, no danger to customers

Story Picture
The latest daylight attack by criminal elements did not happen on Albert Street, in Yabra or St. Martin de Porres. Instead the information superhighway also known as the World Wide Web was the victim. Over the weekend, some mischievous computer users hacked into a portion of Belize Telecommunication Limited’s Internet system, just to prove they could do it. However, Winston Aspinall, BTL’s Internet Services Engineer, says that there is no need for their clients to worry.

Winston Aspinall, Internet Services Engineer

“What transpired on Saturday morning was when one of our internet technicians was doing some regular checks on the system, he noticed that two of the pages had graffiti saying that the page has been hacked and has been defaced. On seeing that he immediately contacted me and we took measures to take down the two sites in question and started looking at the logs and adding more security on to the site.”

Jose Sanchez

“You don’t expect this to happen again anytime soon.”

Winston Aspinall

“No. We don’t expect it to happen. We have taken the necessary measures to not let it happen again.”

Jose Sanchez

“There is a fear from the subscribers that their account numbers will be stolen.”

Winston Aspinall

“This is not the case with this incident. This is a totally different system than the one that actually houses their passwords that is used to access the Internet.”

Jose Sanchez

“The pages that were hacked into, what kind of information were on those pages, anything vital?”

Winston Aspinall

“No it’s only the Belize Web Page where you would go to use the Internet system, or the Belize Web email service that they offer. Those were just the information that were on those pages.”

Aspinall says that the culprits left virtual footsteps on their system which led BTL to the website attrition.org where hackers brag about their exploits.
