Fire in Jane Usher

There was fire in Belize City just before two o’clock this morning. No one was at the house when it went up in flames. The Fire Department managed to contain the blaze before it spread to a nearby building on Tamarind Street on the Jane Usher Boulevard. The home owner says the cause of the fire is not known.

Voice of: Karen Young, Owner of the House

“A young lady by the name of Natalie Claire and her five children were living in this house.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do you know what happened – how this house burnt down?”

Voice of: Karen Young

“I am not sure. The fire department is doing its investigation, so after that we will go from there.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, no one was at home; the young lady who was living here wasn’t at home at the time of the fire?”

Voice of: Karen Young

“No one was at home. The young lady says she was at her boyfriend’s sleeping and the kids were at their dad’s house.”

Kenneth Mortis

Kenneth Mortis, Station Supervisor, National Fire Service

“We dispatched two units and upon our arrival we observed a wooden elevated structure fully engulfed in flames. The fire was concentrated in the north-eastern section of the building and then posed a fire threat to the nearby structure sitting on the south portion of that building. Our fire team got into operation extinguishing this fire, bringing it under control thereby minimizing the damage to the nearby building. That particular structure received minimal damage to the eaves, PVC pipings, and a window.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do we know what caused the fire in the wooden structure?”

Kenneth Mortis

“Right about now our investigation isn’t completed as yet. There are some factors that we are still working with. We are trying to get a hold of the primary occupants who haven’t arrived at the station as yet so that we can have our one-on-one. We have done our physical investigations but before we reveal the actual cause, I would like to have a sit down with the occupants in terms of what was going on before I can say what started the fire. What we can say is that the fire started in the bedroom area of the building that housed two small beds and spread its way to consume the balance of the building. Everything inside was destroyed even though the building remained standing. In my view the building needs to be demolished.”
