Taximan, tourist mugged in Belize City
While much of Belize City is holding its breath in fear of a renewed round of gang violence, the more common variety of street crime is making a comeback. On Wednesday muggers did not discriminate between tourists and locals in their choice of victims. Around 4:00 in the afternoon a taxi driver, Kirk Belisle, picked up a single male passenger in Belama Phase One, who asked to be driven to Coral Grove. When the taxi driver stopped at the designated address his passenger, instead of taking out his wallet, pullet out a gun. Belisle was relieved of three hundred dollars plus his cell phone.
Later that evening a German tourist received the same sort of welcome at the Western entrance to the city. Giaber Andreas told police that he was standing with his girlfriend at the corner of Central American Boulevard and Cemetery Road when they were approached by a dark skinned man wearing a black shirt and gray pants. The man produced a gun and convinced the pair to hand over two hundred and fifty dollars in cash and personal items worth two thousand dollars. No arrests have yet been made in either robbery.
