Santa Cruz Farmers Fear Losing Farm Lands
The Santa Cruz Village Council is also facing another threat. According to Chairman Vincent Scott, more than thirty farmers have been cultivating land at the rear of the village for some eleven years but now there are moves by a company to purchase two thousand acres of land, including the land of the farmers. He is calling on the relevant authorities to consult with the village council and consider the needs of the small farmers.

“We got to find out that this person was trying to get the land. First it was a rumour. The land starts from Santa Cruz and goes all the way to San Roman, close to Georgetown. So when I heard it, it was just a rumour and I said that I don’t believe the rumour but now we are finding out that there is some truth to this. So we are trying to get an explanation also about that because the farmers in the area that is the land that they use to care for their kids and their families. They have been planting crops there. I told them is for everybody to do their declaration and take pictures of the crops that they are planting and then I can come to the media and then share this.”
