S.C.A. Leads the Charge for Youth and Climate in 2020
The Saint Catherine Academy says that as they head into their one hundred and thirtieth anniversary, they will be putting the conversation of climate and youth into action on their school grounds. The high school says that their environmental clubs have led the charge to raise awareness and promote conservation. Today they hosted a forum and launched a reusable shopping bag to discourage the use of single use plastics. Principal Salome Tillett shares more.

“As we celebrate the start of our hundred and thirtieth anniversary, we thought it would be a timely conversation with our young people. We want them to care and do more. So, we thought it would be good to bring the facts to them and get them actively involved in caring for the earth. For years now we have banned styrofoam plastic, straw and plastic utensils. Now, we want to go a little but further. On campus, today, we are going to be banning or at least drastically reducing the use of plastic bottles. So, we have partnered with Bowen and Bowen and they are going to put water coolers in every class. So, our students will only be able to bring recyclable containers to fill their water; no more plastic bag; no more water pouches on campus so that is exciting. So, we were thinking what else can we do? We spoke with other partners who own stores and we said well if we created a bag that your customers, our parent community, could take to the store would you give them a discount? They were happy to jump on board. The first was Brother’s Habet and they said, if they come with that bag they get a five percent discount. We asked at Mikado, the same thing if you come with that SCA bag we don’t have to give a plastic bag and you will get a discount. So, we have been working with other stores and in discount with Angelus Press, San Cas, Save-U, Brodies and MIRAB. Some little things we have to work out but the partnership from the community has been awesome.”
The bags are for sale at S.C.A. Also as a part of its environmental stewardship, S.C.A. is giving back to the city with five trash receptacles installed on Marine Parade between Memorial Park and Golden Bay.
