Young men compete in “Nice Guy” pageant

From time to time we make a journalistic foray into the ever-evolving world of Belizean beauty pageants. The universe that was once confined to Queen of the Bay has in recent years expanded to Miss Belize, Miss Garifuna, Miss Pan American, Miss Rainforest, La Reina del la Costa Maya and the increasingly popular Miss Y. Today News 5’s Jose Sanchez brings us a preview of the latest extravaganza: Mr. Nice Guy.

Competition between the city’s high schools is usually confined to sports, but this weekend the rivalries will be cranked up a notch as the schools go head to head, not on its court, but on the stage. And while the contestants showing off their bodies and brains will all be first class, they will belong to the guys and not the gals.

“The show is for the most popular guy out of each high school. And I will put them all in a pageant. We’ll have the bedtime wear, the casual wear, formal wear. Then we have a section of the show when they can come out and show their talent. We are appealing to them to make them to be creative, do whatever they feel they are good at. There will be a question and answer, we will ask that during the formal wear, and we have other people in between doing other skits, dancing and singing.”

Amongst the entertainment, will be dance performances by the Original Slamming Bodies and Slamming Bodies the New Generation.

While the show will certainly be slamming, the contestants themselves want you to know why they should win the title of Mr. Nice Guy for the 21st Century.

Ariel Rosado, Contestant

“My name is Ariel Rosado. I’m representing St. John’s College. I think I should be Mr. Nice Guy because if someone drops a pencil, I pick it up for them. If anybody sneezes, I say “God Bless”. Cause all my female friends know me by the name of sweetness, and sweetness means nice, so nice guy.”

Jarcel Savery, Contestant

“My name is Jarcel Savery. I’m representing Excelsior High School. I feel like I should be Mr. Nice Guy because I’m the next best thing to the word nice itself.”

Darwin Trujeque, Contestant

“Hi my name is Darwin Trujeque. I’m from E.P. Yorke High school. The reason why I should be Mr. Nice Guy is that whenever the ladies are sad or anything I always put a smile on their face.”

Mark Jenkins, Contestant

“Good morning, my name is Mark Jenkins and I represent Gwen Lizarraga High. I believe that I should be crowned Mr. Nice Guy because I am an all-arounder. I do not only want to be Mr. Nice just for the young, I go for the old, the middle age and everything. So you can say I’m like a medicine, good for everything.”

Bruce Cumberbatch, Contestant

“My name is Bruce Cumberbatch, I’m representing Wesley College. Why I think I think, I should be Mr. Nice Guy for the 21st Century is because I have a good personality. I treat ladies with respect and I’m a true gentleman. If you don’t believe me, ask the young ladies that know me.”

Jamil Canto, Contestant

“My name is Jamil Canto. I attend Nazarene High School. I don’t know why they chose me to be Mr. Nice Guy. Maybe they think I could win it or I might look good for it, I don’t know why.”

The Mr. Nice Guy pageant begins Friday night at seven at Holy Redeemer Parish Hall. Tickets are six dollars. Funds raised from the pageant will go toward the graduation trip of Gwen Liz High.
