Tourist Robbed; Warns Others to be Aware

DeeAnn Steiner

A tourist staying in Punta Gorda says that she has been robbed multiple times and authorities down there didn’t take her report seriously. DeeAnn Steiner of Utah in the U.S.A. says that she has been in Belize since November of last year. She says she plans to relocate to Belize although she has encountered shady individuals while on her stay in P.G.  Steiner says that she had to go to Belmopan to be heard by senior police officials.  She says she is happy with that response, but she hopes that other visitors to Belize are aware.

DeeAnn Steiner, Tourist

“I had my laptop stolen. I had a gold ring stolen. I had this actual coat which I did recover myself. This actually happened in a different case. It was from a gentleman in PG who became a friend and said he would do a tourist thing for me, a tour guide. He took me to one place and basically scammed me out of quite a bit of money and then took my gold ring and this jacket. I took it upon myself to find him in Silk Grass. I went to police there in PG and they took my report but said it wasn’t theft, which confused me because I told them that he took my computer. So, I took it upon myself to go to Belmopan today and report to the authorities above the officer in PG. I spoke with Mr. Mariano, who is the first person I felt is concerned about what happened to me, and he took it upon himself to contact those in PG and made the decision to side in my favour that it was theft. So, I felt good about that. Belize is a great place. I love it. It is beautiful but I am just concerned because being a tourist from America and hearing about missing people and finding people dead, it just concerns me. I think we need to step up with some of the things that are going on especially what happened to me in PG. I went to the authorities and I don’t think they took the information serious enough and it made me feel like they just brushed it off.”
