…And Port Authority advises mariners not to drink
And it is not only the highway, from early this morning, the water taxis have been taking more than the usual amount of commuters to the islands. Most private boat owners have also taken to the seas. The festive weekend is a cause for concern also for the Belize Port Authority because some mariners may not be as cautious as they should be. Port Authority’s Michael Jenkins says that the sea is no place for drinking and the port will be monitoring Belize’s waters.
Michael Jenkins, Control Officer, B.P.A.
“Once again it’s the Easter time and we have more than usual travelers on the sea; boaters, pleasure, crafters and we want to insist that safety is the best way to travel this year. We are having many accidents and we are asking the captains of these vessels to be more vigilant with their safety procedures. Before leaving, we’re asking the captain to make sure that the vessel is fully equipped with the safety equipments and make sure that the passengers on board are comfortable using their life jackets and whatever safety devices you all would have for your passengers. We are also insisting that there is no drinking onboard. It’s hard to stop people from drinking around this time. It’s a time of leisure but at the same time we have to enforce the no drinking policy onboard. So we will be having officers out there doing our frequent patrols and our stops to make sure that everything onboard the vessel is in order.”
