Former Cop Darren Martinez Sentenced to 12 Years for Sexual Assault of Minor
Sentencing for former police constable Dаrrеn Маrtіnеz took place today. Martinez was found guilty last week of the sexual assault of a minor in an incident that goes back to February 2016. Martinez was the boyfriend of the minor’s sister when the sexual assault occurred at their family home. In December 2019, he was found guilty of penetrating the young child and today Justice Colin Williams sentenced him to twelve years in jail. Mitigation plea was heard before sentencing; his Attorney Oswald Twist submitted that Martinez had no previous conviction and that he had expressed remorse. Twist also told the court that the trial had been delayed for four years. But the Crown Counsel Ris Cattouse urged the court to take into consideration the matter of retribution, he also cited the young age of the victim, and the fact that Martinez was a cop and had breached the trust of family. The Justice acknowledged that the child’s age was important and noted that the aggravating circumstances outweighed the mitigating circumstances. The sentence is the minimum for the charge of sexual assault.
