U.S. archaeologist injured in Pine Ridge
A well-known U.S. archeologist was seriously injured today in an automobile accident in the Mountain Pine Ridge. Richard “Scotty” MacNeish, who has excavated extensively in northern Belize, was driving his rented vehicle two miles east of Augustine when he went off the road. The vehicle was discovered by a passing patrol of the Seventh Royal House Artillery, which is undergoing training with the British Army Training Support Unit. The soldiers called in a helicopter from BATSUB, which took MacNeish and an unidentified female colleague to the British Army Hospital. They were subsequently transferred to Belize Medical Associates in the city where MacNeish is receiving treatment for a collapsed lung and possible spleen injury. The woman suffered multiple fractures. MacNeish is one of the world’s foremost experts on ancient agriculture and tools used by early man.
