Guardian says Godfrey ready to challenge BTL
A headline story in today’s Guardian, citing evidence from an electronics manufacturer, claims that a newly formed telecommunications company plans to begin serving Belize in the new year. The opposition newspaper quotes the website of the Korean company LG Electronics that it has signed a contract to supply a twenty-million dollar communications system to the Belizean company International Telecommunications Ltd. ITL, according to the article, is part of the Glenn Godfrey group of companies, which is poised to mount a direct challenge to telecom monopoly holder BTL. BTL’s exclusive license expires at the end of 2002, but the Guardian suggests that there are moves afoot to allow ITL to operate even before that date. Glenn Godfrey, a former minister of government during the last PUP administration, was out of the country today and could not be reached for comment.
