IDB helps social institutions
The Inter-American Development Bank has decided that Christmas is an appropriate time to reach out to the community. As part of IDB’s technical cooperation programme, five social institutions in the city will be refurbished: the Sister Cecilia Home, Raymond Parks Night Shelter, Dorothy Menzies Child Care Centre, Ganns Rest House and Good Samaritan Centre. The thirteen residents of Ganns Rest House, all men, will sleep a little more snugly as repairs are expected to be finished for Christmas. The facility is managed by the Salvation Army.

“We have been assisted by the IDB. They are doing a restructuring of our edifice, such as Ganns as you see here. They are doing the roof and they are doing the wall on the side, they?ll be painting the windows, the whole building entirely. The reason for this is because Hurricane Keith left a lot of damage on the structure and as you know the Ganns Rest House is to take in the homeless, the elderly ones. The Salvation Army as a non-profit institution hasn?t got that sum of money to do these kinds of things. So we appreciate the IDB so much for their offer to do these kinds of repairing on our structure. They went further, doing the night shelter likewise, they are changing some doors, and putting some curtains and wash pans and some mattresses.”

“What we decided to do was really to try and improve the quality of life on a daily basis. If you live in an institution where the windows can?t be closed or a sink isn?t working or you don?t have a grab bar to get up off the toilet…it might seem like something simple, but those are the little things that people overlook. So we had a wish list prepared by Miss Miller from the Good Samaritan Home to help guide us through the exactly what would be need to just improve the quality of their daily lives.”
The IDB has set aside thirty thousand dollars to provide the five institutions with repairs, equipment and services.
