Belize is Removed from the EU List of Harmful Preferential Tax Regimes
Belize has finally been recovered from the EU blacklisting as a harmful tax regime. This comes following a meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council of the European Union which concluded in Brussels on Tuesday. According to a release from the government, it results from the recent amendments to the Income and Business Tax Act and Tax Administrative and Procedure Act which was passed in the House in December. Belize is now deemed to be compliant with all the regulatory changes set out by the EU. But Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte is not jumping up and down. He says that Belize did not belong on the list.
Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General
“We never should have been there in the first place. I don’t really put much stock on what other countries say about my country. I live in a good country. We should never have been on that list in the first place. So I feel neither here or there about it.”
