What’s the Update with UNCAC?
As we told up, while the cabinet and U.D.P. standard bearers met in Belmopan on the political mess it finds itself in, in Belize City, the unions were clamouring for better governance. In its demand letter, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize wants the re-convening of meetings of the UNCAC Steering Committee. The Congress is also demanding that recommendations be adopted from the executive summary report and for the government to move into the second phase of UNCAC. The Attorney General, Michael Peyrefitte, however, is saying that the United Nations has advised that the government wait for the final report before proceeding with the implementation of UNCAC.
Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General
“Well I wrote them back a letter and they have not responded. I told them that we have to wait for the final report. The United Nations themselves have advised us to wait for the final report but I told they can come in to me now if they want and discuss the summary report but they have not responded to me.”
