Ahead of Its Own Demonstration, the P.U.P. Comes Out in Support of the N.T.U.C.B.
“Only the People Can Save the People” demonstration and rally staged by the N.T.U.C.B. precedes another demonstration to be held in the wake of the John Saldivar scandal, in which the former National Security Minister admitted that he collected thousands of dollars from accused fraudster Lev Dermen. On Sunday, the People’s United Party will also protest in Belize City against the Barrow Administration. But even as the P.U.P. is finalizing that event, its Leader John Briceño says that as the government-in-waiting, they had come out in solidarity because corruption by any administration cannot be condoned.
John Briceño, Party Leader, P.U.P.
“The plan is that on Sunday we are going to be out demonstrating and we will be inviting everybody, including the unions, social partners, everybody to come out as Belizeans. But today is also important for me to be here in showing our solidarity with the unions, but it is also important to point out that my wife is a member of the B.N.T.U.; she is the principal of Saint Peter’s Anglican School, so I was here also showing support for her. At the end of the day, it is the people that will decide. Whenever we have the next general elections, we expect that the people are going to come out in large numbers not only to show their dissatisfaction and displeasure with all of the corruption and the spitefulness of the U.D.P. government, but also that they want to vote for a better Belize; they want to vote for hope. And we are confident that the P.U.P. represents that today.”
