Truce called; football will resume
Football fans will have plenty to cheer about this weekend as intervention by the Minister of Sports has resulted in an agreement to resume play in the BFL. The decision by the Belize National Football Association and Belize Football League came as the result of a meeting convened by Minister Cordel Hyde between BNFA president Dr. Bertie Chimilio and BFL commissioner Maito Perdomo. Although the substantive dispute over the BNFA’s legitimacy and BFL’s manners will be resolved at a later date, it appears that both sides have agreed to tone down the volume of rhetoric in the name of developing the sport. Indeed, a BNFA release announcing the resumption of the Regent Insurance Champions Cup Tournament could easily be mistaken for a love letter. Addressed to all “football owners, players and supporters” it announced the resumption of play “with great joy” and praised the “professionalism and efficiency” with which both bodies conduct the responsibilities of their office.
