Minister Aragon on New Responsibilities
While there is a new Minister of National Security, Elodio Aragon Junior remains as junior minister in the ministry with responsibility for police. But he is also now tasked with the day-to-day administration of the entire portfolio. Aragon Junior says he has since met with the Belize Coast Guard and the Belize Defense Force, but he told us today that he is focusing on the Belize Police Department, an area where he has experience having served in the force for long years before entering politics.
Elodio Aragon Jr., Minister of State, Police
“As the Minister of State, I will be having more responsibilities in terms of the day to day activities of the Police Department and the entire Ministry of National Security, which includes the B.D.F., Coast Guard, prison, forensics. So this is the scope of our work and definitely of all of these ministries, I think the one that stands out the most is that of the police department. That is my forte and that is the area I want to focus on a lot too—not that the rest don’t need the focusing, but I do think that this is the department that interacts with the public on a day to day basis. So it is an area of concern for our people nationally and that is why we have to focus on the strategies that need to be employed so that we can see a more effective police department.”
