Louis Carter Convicted for Murder

Louis Carter

San Pedro resident Louis Carter was found guilty of murder today by Justice Colin Williams. Carter was on trial for the murder of Dwayne Hyde, a mechanic also of the island, who was shot dead in 2016 inside his yard in the Escalante Subdivision of San Pedro Town.  Two weeks ago, Carter gave an unsworn statement from the dock, saying he killed Hyde in self defense after Hyde aggressed him in the wee hours of July thirteenth, 2016. He said that Hyde pulled out a gun and pointed it at him. Fearing for his life, Carter said he ran, but Hyde caught up with him and they struggle for the gun, which discharged. A bullet caught Hyde in the abdomen.  Hyde, who had a screw driver, also inflicted wounds to Carter’s neck, mouth and abdomen. But in delivering his ruling today in court, Justice Williams said that he did not believe that Hyde was the aggressor.  He relied on the testimony of Kimberly Humes, who was Hyde’s common-law wife who witnessed the incident. Justice Williams said that he believed that Carter sought out Hyde and shot him, unprovoked.  He also thought that from the evidence given of the bullet wound that Hyde suffered, it was not possible that the two were struggling for the gun when Hyde was shot and died two weeks later from the injury. Supreme Court Justice Colin Williams will sentence Carter next week Friday.
