Minister Aragon: No Crisis in U.D.P.; Normal Process of Selecting New Leader

Tonight, the United Democratic Party finds itself in a conundrum and without a clear leader to succeed Prime Minister Dean Barrow.  Merely two weeks ago, John Saldivar emerged as leader-elect, but soon after all came crashing down, placing the governing party in a most unenviable position in the waning days of their third term in office.  Many call it a crisis of leadership, but Minister Elodio Aragon Junior says not so.

“I don’t think the U.D.P. is in a crisis. It is a normal course that the United Democratic Party must take. It is in any mass party. There comes a time where a transition must be made in leadership. You all know that the Constitution of this country calls that the prime minister cannot serve more than three terms. The Prime Minister, Honourable Dean Barrow, has now reached to that end of the rope in terms of his service to this country and I must say that he has done an excellent job, but it is now time for transition for the United Democratic Party. But what is happening now is just a transition phase.”

“Sir but that transition is bumpy. It is very bumpy and it is playing out in the public.”

“Well I don’t see it as bumpy. I am telling you that there is a transition phase that is taking place and in any political party, of course, you have people who aspire to be leaders in this great United Democratic Party.”
