New housing for Port Loyola
Christmas came five days early for some residents of the Port Loyola Division. Through a working partnership with the Belize Port Authority, Area Representative Dolores Balderamos Garcia handed over three houses on Neal Penn Road to Cherrie Beaton, Arthur Arnold and Desiree Sutherland. News Five was on hand for the occasion.
Cherrie Beaton, Homeowner
“Well I feel very very very very good.”
Jacqueline Woods
“What was the situation like before?”
Cherrie Beaton
“Well the situation was not that bad, I didn’t have life that bad, my life was good, but now it’s better because I am in my new home and I got it in time for Christmas.”
Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Min. of Human Development
“Well the Port Authority had approached me to tell me that they needed to widen the road access over at Caesar Ridge Road. I said to them we had Miss Cherrie Mae and we had Miss Sutherland and we had Mister Arthur Arnold, so we sat down and we said look we have got to help the people. We came to an agreement that if we made the land available, if our committee made the land available, they would construct the homes.”
Arthur Arnold, Homeowner
“It’s nice see that we are here in a better condition than where we were.”
Jacqueline Woods
“What was it like before?”
Arthur Arnold
“Well you find in the situation where we were, if a little rains comes, the yard would get flooded and we cannot do what we feel like and had to fix a lot of London bridges, but here it’s much better.”
Balderamos says two more homes will be constructed in the neighbourhood by the Port Authority. She also noted that government has its own programme to provide affordable homes to Belizeans in the area. On Jane Usher Boulevard, nineteen houses will be constructed and approximately thirty-five more will be built on Fabers Road.
