Did a Big Developer in Riversdale Block a Creek in the Community?

Residents in Riversdale say that a big developer is causing problems in the community. They are calling for the immediate removal of a road that they say was laid on top of a creek to the north of the village. The villagers say that the road is being pushed to facilitate the sale of lots and construction of hotels.  They report that there was no consultation with the community and they are not sure if any assessment was done. Today we spoke with fisherman Alberto Fox who explained the issue.

On the Phone: Alberto Fox, Fisherman, Riversdale

“Right now it is stagnant and stink and it still nuh open. They came maybe like on Sunday and they did a small lee dug out. They dig it out but the thing is that it needs to be dug out a lot more. It needs to be dig twenty-five feet more and five feet more on the other side. Actually, the bar mouth cover because due to how they put the road, so the water can’t flow through.”

“Why exactly is that creek blocked off?”

On the Phone: Alberto Fox

“Well, one of the reasons I get to understand is that they want to make a road all the way from Riversdale to South Stann Creek River, which is because they want to build resorts and issue lots to foreigners.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, these are big developers we are talking about?”

On the Phone: Alberto Fox

“Yes, these are developers. They don’t care.”

Andrea Polanco

“Have you guys been able to find out if an EIA has been obtained; any kind of assessment was done out there; any kind of consultation at all with the community?”

On the Phone: Alberto Fox

“No. There was no consultation with the people of Riversdale. No consultation with the people from the Peninusla. I mean to say, they just come and build a road without asking anybody weh impact this would do to Riversdale. But not just to Riversdale but to the whole Peninsula. These creeks push out tonnes of sand – because dah wah area weh pump out sand to the sea and then it goes right down to the coast line.”
