ComPol Speaks on Drug Activity in the Region

Chester Williams

The excess production of cocaine in Colombia has been causing increased activity in getting the drug into the North American market, where the appetite is insatiable. It means that the transhipment of drugs through places like Belize is also expected to heighten.  Williams says the department will have to step up.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“The drug activity picked up about two years ago and I have said in previous interviews, I had gone to Colombia in 2018 twice on official visits. And on those occasions, when we were briefed by the Colombian police, they said to us that there is a huge amount of cocaine in Colombia—so much more than they have ever seen—and there is an urgent need for the cartels to get these drugs out of Colombia and get it to North America. And so it is because of that that we are seeing these increases. It is going to continue until those drugs are out of Columbia. It is a difficult thing that we have to contend with but at the end of the day, we’re not going to use any excuse we must try to do the best that we can to bet able to intercept whenever they come.”
