Radford Baizar’s Grieving Mother Slams Ministry of National Security

Up to news time, the families of the crash victims are at Price Barracks and still there was no word on the bodies of their loved ones. Thirty-four-year-old Radford Baizar, a major in the Belize Defense Force, perished along with three others in the helicopter crash on Thursday. Up to the time of his demise, Baizar had served fourteen years in the military, ascending within the ranks of the B.D.F. to become an airman. This evening, News Five caught up with Jean Baizar outside of the morgue at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The distraught mother shared her disappointment with the Ministry of National Security since no one, including Brigadier General Steven Ortega, contacted her to inform her of Radford’s disappearance. Baizar also explained that her son had a passion for flying and that he dedicated his life to aviation.

“All I know is that he went on some mission with this drug interception that happened, I think it was Thursday morning and I assumed that that mission was over because I saw them moving drugs and talking all about the danger the police were involved in and all of that, not knowing that my son’s helicopter was in danger. He was in danger, nobody was concerned, nobody got in touch with us, nobody told us that they lost the helicopter and that it was, you know, it crashed, you know. We didn’t know anything until this morning I had to hear it off the street that the B.D.F. helicopter was missing. That’s the reason why I was calling to let my son know that his little baby was sick and wanted to talk to him. He wasn’t responding. His common-law wife was trying to get in touch with him and couldn’t get in touch with him all through the night worried, nobody came and said anything. After eleven, we heard, okay they confirmed Radford Baizar, Major Baizar was one of them and the other pilot. Up to now, I’m at the morgue here, the Commandant of B.D.F. did not get in touch with me, the Commissioner of Police did not get in touch with me, the Attorney General. Nobody got in touch with this family. My son loved flying, he loved his job, he loved to serve his country, he went down that way and this is the respect and thanks he got. Nobody said anything.”

“It is a terrible shock and a tragedy and I am still trying to process it and to make it worse, like I said, not to be informed, you know. Your son is out there on the line for this country and nobody has the decency or respect to come and say something went wrong? Just come and say something went wrong and we could take it from there.”
