Transport Dept. intends to monitor bus situation

Story PictureIf you’re taking the public transportation system over the coming holidays you’re urged to be patient because since the new bus schedules were approved in October last year, there have been many complaints about blatant glitches in the system. These range from buses not leaving on schedule, late arrivals at destinations, and overcrowding. There have been many meetings to address these difficulties that still remain unresolved. Chief Transport Officer, Candelaria Saldivar told News Five that the Transport Department is short of resources but that the new fiscal year brings hope for a strengthened monitoring system.

Candelaria Saldivar, Chief Transport Officer
“We do not have adequate vehicles to do the enforcement on the road. We’re trying to do it at the terminal but we’re short of vehicle and we have been trying to address that through the Ministry and the Ministry of Finance, but what we have been trying to do is dialogue with the bus operators that things would improve. The best that we could do is to try to get some more vehicles and even some more staff so that we could do the kind of enforcement that is needed.”

“How soon is that coming?”

Candelaria Saldivar
“Well, we just have the new financial year now so we’re hoping that things will get better with this new financial year in terms of vehicles and staffing.”
