New visitors centre for Maya site

The Mayan site of Cerros on Corozal Bay is not well known, but a new project undertaken by the Department of Archaeology and the Protected Areas Conservation Trust will make it more attractive to visitors. Under the PACT financed programme, an existing open-air pavilion will be converted to a visitors centre, featuring display panels with information on the ancient pre-classic site. Another building will be upgraded as a place where visitors can rest or enjoy refreshments. The site of Cerros is one of the few in Belize that fronts directly on the Caribbean Sea with a commanding view of the surrounding area. It is well known among archaeologists for its brightly painted stucco facades and four well preserved masks.
