Belizean observes T & T elections
Belize will be represented on the team of observers for next week’s elections in Trinidad and Tobago. Chief Elections Officer Myrtle Palacio is one of six members of the Commonwealth Observers Group appointed to witness the T and T balloting, which takes place on Monday. The group will be headed by former Canadian Cabinet Minister Roy Maclaren and includes one delegate each from Zambia, Australia, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. The observers were selected by Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon after an invitation by the government of Trinidad and Tobago. The election campaign between the ruling United National Congress led by Basdeo Panday and Opposition People’s National Movement under former Prime Minister Patrick Manning, has been particularly hard fought. The role of the Commonwealth team, however, is to observe the elections and not supervise them.
